Appreciations
I would like to thank our 19th generation ancestor Phoon Saik Kow for compiling details of our family tree originating from Choong Hop to Soon Tuck, China. This important document was handed down to my late father Phoon Swee Choong for safe-keeping and updating from generation to generation irrespective of locations of the Phoons.
I must also thank my brother Phoon Kok Cheong for his tremendous efforts in compiling records on history of the Phoons originating from BC 1122 till modern days from the Chau Dynasty in China into Malaysia.
Without the passions , enthusiasm and hard works of these two Phoon members, I would not be able to translate these informations for your perusal.
Most important of all, Phoons of the 22nd generation must continue to update these informations for your future generations.

Overseas Migrations
Our 20th generation ancestor Phoon Chak Hoong ( also known as Phoon Swee Choong ) married madam Chang Ngan Khuan and had their eldest daughter Phoon Lau Har and son Phoon Kok Lau born in Soon Tuck, China. Phoon Swee Choong later migrated to Penang, Malaysia. Phoon Lau Har and Phoon Kok Lau migrated to Hong Kong during the civil war between Kuok Ming Tang and the Chinese Communist Party in China.
Once settled down in Penang, Phoon Swee Choong arranged for his wife Chang Ngan Khuan to join him in Penang. They gave birth to Lau Cheng, Kok Cheong, Lau Choong, Lau Keng and Kok Theng in Penang.

The Big Migrations
Since the year BC 1122, China had gone through turbulent years of civil wars, international wars, chaos, unrest, colonisation, revolutions.......Like many others Chinese, the Phoons began moving out of Weng Yeong areas heading towards the southern part of China. They first landed in Hong Chou and some of them moved on to Kong Sai, Woo Nam, Kwong Dong, Foo Chien, Taiwan and various countries of South East Asia.
Our Phoon ancestor was one of those settled down in Kwong Dong during the big migrations periods. During Ming Dynasty in the year of Keng Thai Third Year, our ancestors moved from Choong Hop district of Kwong Dong to the Lai Chuen village of Soon Tuck district of Kwong Dong province. Kwong Dong is now known as Guang Chou.

In Search Of Root
"Phoon" is a family name established more than three thousand years ago. During "Chau" Dynasty, emperor "Chau Mun Wong" conferred a piece of land called "Patt" to his 15th son who then was called "Patt Koong". "Patt" is situated at the northern part of today's "Ham Yong" of "Siaan" in China. Later, "Patt Koong" conferred to his 4th son "Kwai Suen Koong" a piece of land in "Hoo Nam" called "Phoon" which is situated in "Weng Yeong" area of "Log Yeong" district of China.
It was the tradition of olden days that people normally took the name of the place they owned to be their family name. Hence, this family branch of "Chau Mun Wong" headed by "Kwai Suen Koong" adopted "Phoon" as their family name in the year BC 1122.
Since "Chau Mun Wong" was the direct descendant of the first emperor "Wang Tee", the Phoons are naturally the descendants of "Wang Tee". The "Phoon" family normally names their home as "Weng Yeong" .
